I had so much fun getting creative with my photos recently. I took an average photo of some cherry blossoms in my back yard and turned it into the fantastical image you see here using techniques from Olaf Giermann’s course Mastering Adobe Photoshop Filters: Learn by Video (produced in partnership with our friends at Peachpit Press).

I learned this technique from the lesson entitled “Creating Self-Updating Kaleidoscopic Effects,” and I just love all the rich details that developed. It took me a little while to set up the basic structure of the image, but Olaf led me through the process step by step. Once I completed the first one, I was able to quickly and easily create several more amazing images by selecting different areas of the original photo and saving each one as the Smart Object that forms the basis of the kaleidoscopic effect. Once you save the changes to the Smart Object, your entire kaleidoscopic image updates instantly. The possibilities are endless with this technique, especially when you apply different artistic filters, for example changing the texture or enhancing the colors. I can’t wait to try it again with a different image! Give it a try yourself and let me know how it turns out for you.
